“Gassho (In Gratitude): A Tanka for Usui-san’s Birthday”

Kuramayama
Where Reiki met its Founder
The bell rings our truth
Of gratitude for forebears
In this space we are all One

Lori McClellan, RMT/RP and Founder of The Reiki Space™

Waka is a form of Japanese poetry. Tanka in particular is written in 5 lines, with 5,7,5,7, and 7 syllables, usually a subject of deep reflection or emotion. In UsuiReikiRyoho, or Traditional Japanese Reiki, we are taught that Mikao Usui meditated on waka as part of Reiki practice, particularly those composed by the Meiji Emperor, a prolific writer of poetry. It is in honor of lineage, of Reiki as a practice to self-heal, and of Usui-san’s focus to teach this art that this tanka was composed, and composed in the Reiki space. Happy Birthday to Usui-san, August 15.

“As a Marriage and Family Therapist and as a person on my own personal journey, I enjoyed this memoir very much. This is an easy, but meaningful read. It is full of great resources and personal insights that can aid others in their journeys to wholeness. The author not only advocates self-compassion, but models it, as well. She clearly shows how her pain became a gateway to healing her whole being as she followed the path that opened up to her. I definitely think her work is an inspiration.” — Amazon Customer
